Subject: General Accounting Office (GAO) report "FOOD SAFETY AND
QUALITY"
Enclosed is a copy of the GAO report to the Chairman, Human
Resources and Intergovernmental Relations Subcommittee, Committee
on Government Operations, House of Representatives report titled
FOOD SAFETY AND QUALITY and subtitled FDA Surveys Not Adequate to
Demonstrate Safety of Milk Supply.
This review was very limited in scope and focused on the surveys
done in 1988 and 1990 for sulfamethazine residues in milk. As you
can see it was a very thorough review.
Another GAO review was started earlier this month that will focus
more broadly on animal drug residues in milk and the Grade A milk
program. Several states have already been contacted by the GAO
about their programs.
In addition the Office of the Inspector General is also
investigating issues relating to drug residues in milk and the
Grade A milk program.
