INTRODUCTION AND PURPOSE

Establish a national baseline on the occurrence of foodborne illness risk factors
Effort to collect sufficient data to measure patterns in the occurrence of foodborne illness risk factors over time

Speaker's Notes

By establishing the 1998 Baseline on the occurrence of foodborne illness risk factors, FDA has a performance measure against which industry and regulatory efforts to change behaviors and practices directly related to foodborne illness will be measured. This study is intended to fill a void that currently exists in the assessment of program effectiveness for controlling these foodborne illness risk factors.

In order to detect trends of improvement and/or regression in this study, it is necessary to collect data from at least three perferably more, periods in time.
